What is "Flash" memory?

Flash memory is a non-volatile form of RAM. In other words, Flash memory retains stored data without power. With most other forms of RAM, loss of power means loss of data. You could think of Flash memory as a small hard drive with no moving parts.

Flash memory usually comes in the form of a "PC Card" (aka PCMCIA card). Most laptop computers come with 2 sockets for PC Cards, and adapters are available for the less mobile variety of computer.

PC Card based Flash memory is also the storage medium of choice for the new breed of digital cameras. By storing digital images on a device that can be plugged right into a computer, images can be easily transferred to computer for manipulation or incorporation into such things as newsletters.
