What does my motherboard supplier mean by, "SPD DIMMs are the
preferred, but non-buffered DIMMs will work fine"?
They're confused. Non-buffered 168-pin DIMMs are supposed to have SPD chips, as
all Advantage Memory non-buffered 168-pin DIMMs do. Some memory manufacturers
cut corners and sacrifice reliability by leaving the SPD chip off, since some
motherboards don't actually require it to function. However, some motherboards
that don’t have the requirement will still utilize the SPD to optimize
performance or compatibility.
